The view from the top isn't scenery at all

Dear Flist -
I'm scheduled to give a presentation at the 42nd Wetzlar Days of Speculative Fiction (die Wetzlaer Phantastiktage) on September 12. This year, the annual conference focuses on „Writing Fantasy Worlds: Fanfiction between Production and Reception“.

I combined two current interests of mine – fanfiction and literary fiction – and suggested a presentation about "Literary Fanfiction: A contradiction?“

Now, I don't think much of the distinction between high brow and low brow literature, or between genre and literary texts. Literary texts are just another genre to me, with genre definitions and genre expectations, just like in any genre. But it irks me that when people talk about fanfiction, there is this unspoken assumption that it is all genre and all romance. Nothing wrong with this: I made genre writing my life's profession, and I love queer romance. But there is more to fanfiction. And those fanfics, the ones that are not easily classified as "genre" - they are the ones I want to talk about.

I wrote in my proposal:

Fanfiction is widely considered to be genre fiction: The biggest fandoms belong to the sf&f genre: Harry Potter, Star Wars and Marvel. Fifty Shades of Grey – the erotic novel that catapulted fanfiction from the nerdy corners of the internet onto the public stage of the publishing world – is based on a Twilight fic (genre fantasy). Fanfiction is often per se seen as all romance, another popular genre. In the last decade, a new subgenre has come to dominate the publishing industry: New Adult Romance, complete with a tagging and trope system that comes straight from fanfiction (slow burn, there's only one bed, enemies to lovers ...) and with a huge following of a comnunity of (female) readers. Just like fanfiction.

But what about fanfiction that does not want be genre fiction? Does such fic even exist? Is there such a thing as Literary Fanfiction, is there high brow fic? Is there fanfiction that can be considered "serious literature" - with a focus on language, literary form and perhaps more philosophical themes?

Obviously, my answer will be
a. the distinction between genre and literary fiction is obsolete, and
b. yes, there is literary fanfiction. :)

My question to you:

Can you recommend me any fics that you would consider literary fanfiction?
Any fandom, any form, but only one-shots.
